There are many bacteria which live and breed at all times in the mouth. There is a specific subset of bacteria known to cause periodontal disease. While not routine, at times, antibiotics are needed in the management of periodontal disease. This is particularly true for patients who are not responsive to traditional therapies and in cases of aggressive periodontal disease. Microbial testing may be considered in order to identify specific bacteria present under the gum line and to aid in the selection of an appropriate antibiotic, when indicated. Bacterial samples obtained from periodontal pockets are sent for analysis at a microbial testing center. The center provides a detailed analysis to guide further treatment decisions.
