Osseous surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures. Osseous surgery, sometimes referred to as pocket reduction surgery, is accomplished to reshape deformities in the alveolar bone and reduce pocket depths surrounding the teeth in order to correct the tissue destruction from periodontal infection. It is a common necessity in the effective treatment of more advanced periodontal diseases. In many cases this is the treatment of choice enabling the clinician to achieve a stable and maintainable result.
The ultimate goal of osseous surgery is to reduce or eliminate the periodontal pockets that cause periodontal disease. Reduced pocket depths are important in order to provide access for home plaque control and more predictable and stable maintenance care. Osseous surgery reduces pocket depths, making it easier to brush and floss, and thereby prevent further periodontal disease. In short, the goal is to create a mouth that you have a fighting chance to keep clean.
